I’ve learned that life isn’t about how I fall but how I choose to get back up again.

I’ve been through enough therapy to learn how to bounce back from those moments where I feel like I’m a failure.

In fact, did you know that the Bible actually says that Christians will have moments where they fall:

Proverbs 24:16 states, “for the righteous falls seven times and rises again…” (ESV).

I have been through a very painful divorce, but I chose to rise again by going to therapy.

I’ve been through an unexpected job loss, but I chose to rise again by taking my online writing more seriously.

I’ve lost my Father and daughter just a few years apart, but I chose not to wallow in grief by releasing my pain through tearful prayers.

After I lost my daughter to a stillbirth, I took a semester off from my MA program at Johns Hopkins because I just couldn’t grieve her loss while also taking on the challenges of a Master’s program.

So, I took some time for myself, grieved, and went back the next semester to study (while also grieving some more!)

By December of 2019, I graduated while pregnant with my son, Eddie! (He’ll be 6 in a few weeks!)

All of these moments in my life reflect that I’ve had downs just like you do.

But the purpose of our downs isn’t for us to stay where we fall.

The purpose of them is to gain a learning lesson so we can use them as opportunities to draw closer to Christ and be stronger vessels to help others.

Will the journey toward overcoming failure and loss be perfect? Of course not.

When I grieved, there were days I didn’t feel like reading my Bible, but I read it anyway.

There were days that I was mad at God, but I poured out my heart to Him and asked Him to heal my anger and replace it with His love.

God doesn’t expect you to be perfect. He understands that your journey will have mistakes, setbacks, and failures.

But He doesn’t expect you to wallow where you fell.

Eventually, you have to get back up again.

I’m writing this to you, my sister in Christ, because some of us decided to stay stuck where we fell.

We had a bad breakup and decided never to love again.

We stopped school and overspiritualized the moment by deciding it “just wasn’t God’s will to finish.”

We started the pages of our books in journals, but we let the enemy cause us to think that our writing wasn’t good enough for us to become authors.

Yet, when you’re in Christ, there’s beauty in your falls. That beauty is present in the intimacy you gain from Him from the lesson, and the resilience you gain because you learn to get back up again.

So, my sister, don’t stop at the fall.

Keep going.

Take the next step to write again.

Research the schools again.

Apply for the program or job again.

Go to therapy again.

Love and date again. (only if you’re healed…if not, then go to therapy and then date again!)

Whatever it is…do it. Again.

Because this Christian life isn’t about how you fall.

It’s about how you rise again in Christ.

PS- Many of us struggle with rising after failure because we overthink our next move. Don’t think too far into the future. Just decide to take one small step toward your goal. What’s one setback you’ve had? What’s one small step you plan to take this week toward your goal? After that step is completed, take the next small step. Then, the next, and so on. Don’t overthink it. Just pray, move, and keep moving forward.
